In the New Testament Book of Acts, which we read from during Easter, Luke gives us a window into the life and mission of the first Christian community, inspired by the Resurrection and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Today we see that empowering in one man, Stephen, whom the church traditionally honours as “the first martyr”. But the essence of the word “martyr” is simply bearing witness. Stephen reported openly and honestly what he had seen, as he gazed into heaven.
